MUG’S DOURO TIP: Douro trains can get crowded
Trains from Sao Bento can be crowded. Get there early and if you can get your tickets the day before. We’d got the “senor” train discount and paid the princely sum of €5 each. Sit on the right hand side heading to get the water views of the big river Douro. There were glimpses at the beginning but then not much until we got close to Régua.
MUG’S DOURO TIP: Driving can be challenging
Our 20km drive to Covelinhas where we were staying was challenging. I would get a train to Pinhao or Covelinhas in future. Everything is within reach there – either by cab, train or by arrangement.
DOURO MUG’S TIP: Stay at Quinta Das Travessa and enjoy the wonderful three course meal every night with Cristina and Nuno.
Wonderful rooms with river and vineyard views. Small with only a few rooms – book early. Make sure you pay the extra for the wonderful dinner each evening. If you aren’t driving get off the train at the almost deserted Covelinhas station and arrange to be picked up.
